About the programme
Pioneered in 1963 with BA English Literature and Part II English, the Department of English was granted approval by Madras University on 7/5/1964 in communication no. 3/1(4)/64/A4318 Dt 7/5/1964 for Branch XII English with 12 permanent seats.Formalization for permanent aegis of MA Literature was acknowledged via communication no. 3/1(34)69/A2583 Dt 21/07/1969 by Bharathiar University in 1969 with 13 permanent seats and 1 seat for PG Diploma. MPhil English PT was introduced in 1983, FT in 1989 and PhD English in 2009 under the affiliation of Bharathiar University.
The vision of the English Department is to hone students to the richness, range and vitality of the English Language and Literature.
It aspires to provide the most ideal pedagogical inputs for literary studies from undergraduate to post- doctoral level on par with the best worldwide.
It strives to give maximum impetus to research and research-oriented activities by facilitating with upgraded infrastructure, and required ambience.
The Mission of the English Department is to prepare the students to discover the dynamics of English studies in the contemporary context, imbibed with multi-cultural perspective and qualified by critical thought, thereby bridging the gap between the word and the world. The department aims to make available the entire spectrum of English studies coupled with cutting- edge research of global relevance and enables students to confront the challenges of life through life- long learning.
BA (English Literature)
The programme instills a comprehensive understanding and humanistic approach to peoples, cultures, and global issues through the study of the various literatures in English as they appear in different forms and genres.

MA (English Literature)
The programme helps students develop knowledge and understanding of English literature and sharpen skills of literary research, writing and analysis. It ensures the development of research and analytical skills, and advances the level of writing.
