PSGRKCW was the first college in Tamil Nadu to offer BCom Degree course exclusively for women in 1970. The department now has 360 students at the undergraduate level in the aided stream.
Vocational teaching was introduced in 2005-06 with a career-oriented add-on course on “Entrepreneurial Development” at Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels.
Along with aided B.Com, the College also has 6 other specialization in B.Com Degree Course viz., B.Com (CA), B.Com (e.com),B.Com (AM), B.Com(PA),B.Com(A&F) and B.Com(FS). There are 360 students in the aided B.Com & around 1100 students in self finance Courses. There are 9 aided faculties and 32 faculties in Self finance stream of which 3 have completed PhD and more than 25 are pursuing their PhD.
The Department of Commerce has been upgraded as a full-fledged research department since 2006 –07 for both M Phil and Ph D courses. The Department has under- taken Major and Minor projects funded by ICSSR and UGC respectively. The Department has the credit of having organized a number of Guest lectures, Workshops, Conferences and Seminars at State/National/Inter National levels.
Faculty development programmes are arranged to enrich the staff with updated materials to enhance their teaching. Faculty and students are encouraged to present research papers at workshops, conferences and seminars at national and international levels. Faculty is motivated to publish research articles in national and international journals and magazines. Innovative teaching techniques like OHP, Guest lecture, PPT, and Video Conferencing are being adopted in class room teaching.
To motivate the students to pursue professional courses, coaching classes for ACS, CA and ICWA are conducted by the Department in partnership with respective Institutes.
The Department of Commerce had 8 PhD guides till 2011-12 and at present is having 5 recognized PhD guides. The Department has so far produced 18 PhDs of which 2 are full time researchers and 16 are part timers. At present 21 PhDs are pursuing their research of which 3 are on regular schedule and 19 are part timers.
This part time research facility provides the working faculty an opportunity to complete their PhD without affecting their livelihood and over all experience. Similarly, for a guide, who can enroll 8 candidates, if part timers is not allowed, her guide ship is also not utilized to the full extent as most of the enrollment is only for par time course.
There are 20 recognized M.Phil guides attached to the Department of Commerce. Till date 62 M.Phil have been produced and at present 9 students are pursuing their fulltime M.Phil Course.
