About the Department

The Department of Zoology was established in the year 1979. It offers B.Sc Zoology Main Course, Allied Zoology as a subsidiary/complementary subject for the Science programmes keeping in view of the new trends in the emerging career oriented education system. The special interest of the Department has always been to work for the biodiversity, and bio-conservation through the activities of the Naturalists Association and the Eco watch club. Of the five faculty members, four are doctoral degree holders. The faculty members of the department have been actively engaged in research and have received research grants from various funding agencies such as UGC, DST in addition to industry sponsored projects. Faculty takes keen interest in participating and presenting their research papers in seminars and symposia at international and national levels, have presented and published more than 40 research papers in international and national research journals for the past five years. The Department has a well equipped library with more than 3500 books and a well maintained museum with more than 200 specimens.

About the Naturalist’s Association

The Naturalist’s Association comprises of both the Botany and Zoology Departments of the college and the association intends to encourage a better understanding of the natural environment and to awaken concern for our natural heritage among the student community so as to have a healthy, sustainable natural environment and to learn about, celebrate, preserve and nurture nature for the benefit of future generations. A number of guest lectures, workshops, seminars and tree planting programmes are organized involving academicians, government officials and conversationalists who share their knowledge, information and love towards nature and address the students to highlight the positive actions that benefit nature. For more than 20 years, this association is encouraging in creating networking, training, and collaboration among members in support of our conserving nature.

Dr.N.Ezhili Associate Professor & Head, Department of Zoology presented a paper at ‘Sarawak Biodiversity centre’ at Kuching – Malaysia on 19th, 20th and 21st 2008.
Dr.P.B. Harathi, Assistant Professor,Department of Zoology presented a research paper entitled “Spatial Analysis of Cancer Risk in Tamil Nadu using GIS” at the 2nd International Conference on Health GIS, 14th to 16th Jan, 2008, Bangkok, Thailand.
Dr.N.Ezhili Associate Professor & Head, Department of Zoology presented 2 research papers entitled In Vitro Shoot Multiplication of Gloriosa superbo L. – An lmportant Anticancer Medicinal Herb and Effects of phosphorus on physiological, photosynthetic pigments and oxidative status in Vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides L.) under lead (Pb) treatment at ‘Planetary Scientific Research centre’ at Phuket, Thailand on 18th and 19th December 2012.
Dr.Radha.R, Assistant Professor,Department of Zoology presented a research paper entitled “Comparative Toxicity and Efficacy of Two Entomopathogenic Fungi In Stored Cowpea Against Cowpea bruchid, Callosobruchus maculatus(F) (Coleoptera : Bruchidae) at the Global Conference on Entomology held from November 8-12, 2013 at Kuching, Malaysia.
Mrs Susheela.P,Assistant Professor,Department of Zoology presented a oral paper entitled “Laboratory Evaluation of the Biochemical Parameters in the Haemolymph of the Lepidopteran Larvae Before and After Stinging by the Potter Wasp, Eumenes conica ( Insecta: Hymenoptera)” at the Global Conference on Entomology held from November 8-12, 2013 at Kuching, Malaysia.

Student Achievements

Ms.Kavya.B of III B.Sc AZBT attended an international workshop on Capacity Building conducted by Arigatou International from May 8-12, 2013 in Caux, Geneva. Arigatou International is an international organization which works on Ethics Education, DPAC (Day of Prayer and Action for Peace) with Young Facilitators and volunteers.
Miss.Charumathi M., of III B.Sc., Advanced Zoology & Biotechnology has been awarded with the VIII Special Prize for her excellent and outstanding performance in curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities for the period 2012-2015
Miss K .Subhashini.K of III B.Sc., Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology was selected and attended the Science Academic’s Summer Research Fellowship programme jointly sponsored by IASc (Bengaluru), INSA(New Delhi) and NASI (Allahabad) during May -June 2015 (60 days) at Central University of Kerala, Kasargod and worked on the project entitled “ Comparison of Plant Densities between Two Different Habitats” under the supervision of Dr.Suhel Quader, Nature Conservation Foundation, Bengaluru.

Staff Achievements

Mrs.Susheela.P, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology was selected and attended the Science Academic’s Summer Research Fellowship programme jointly sponsored by IASc (Bengaluru), INSA(New Delhi) and NASI (Allahabad) during April-June 2015 (57 days) at Central University of Kerala, Kasargod and worked on the project entitled “ A Study of the Behavioural Ecology of the Ground Nesting Wasp, Ammophila sps and the Predator-Prey Interactions in its Nesting Ground” under the supervision of Dr.P.A.Sinu, Department of Animal Science, Central University of Kerala, Kasargod.
